Public Statement from Theodore A. Adams III, President of Red Zeppelin Productions

There is no easy way to address in a public statement all of my thoughts and feelings as our nation continues to grapple with racial injustice and violence at the expense of Black Lives.  We took the time before issuing this statement because, in truth, I have a hard time finding the words to say.  As a Black man, the reasons which have instigated our nation’s current uprisings are not new to me; the fact is, I have had to deal with these issues my whole life, every day.

Even last week, I was challenged by a stranger (who ‘kindly’ asked where my house was) as I was walking my dog in a neighborhood I’ve lived in since 1988.  I know what it’s like to wonder if I’m going to die when I get pulled over by the police, especially when I know I haven’t done anything wrong.  I know what it’s like to fear for my son’s life as he is racially profiled by authorities because he “fit the description” of someone they were seeking to apprehend.

For most Americans, this is the first time they have seen an African American tortured and murdered by the authorities.  I have seen scenes like this my entire life.  And no, not from a smartphone video.  Ask any African American over the age of 50.  If you think I am being overly dramatic, I honestly don’t care.  All you have to do is look for it. It’s not my fault if you haven’t been paying attention.

People think legal segregation and racism ended over a century ago.  It didn’t.

I’m appreciative that people and companies are finally taking note, but the truth is there is so much more that must be done, and I am tired.  I am tired of telling people how they are supposed to empathize with a person like me, of trying to explain racism and inequality to acquaintances and colleagues. Truthfully, I am tired of even writing statements such as this.

Many of our followers and subscribers may not have been fully aware of our history as either Laurel Channel or Film Fest Magazine.  Now, you know.  Both are Black owned businesses founded, directed and managed by individuals who identify as Black and People Of Color. The parent company, Unified Industries Incorporated, is an African American company that has been in existence for 50 years.

We are deeply grateful to those of you who have been unwavering in your support for Black Lives throughout these last few days.  We are honored to have the opportunity to be able to tell our stories and share space with other Black and POC filmmakers during such a troubled time.  We also want to express our humbled gratitude and solidarity with the Asian American community.  We see you suffering, too.  We stand with you and we honor your Lives as well.

I pray that our nation doesn’t forget about this in two weeks.  To my community, please rest when you can.  I hope you find solace and strength through friends, loved ones and allies who truly support and care for you.

With the highest respect, love and solidarity,

Theodore A. Adams III, President, Red Zeppelin Productions
